Antimicrobial Resistance in Spain: a call to boost prevention and control measures / Resistencia a los Antibióticos en España: Un llamamiento a impulsar las medidas de prevención y control en Europa"
ESPAÑOL MÁS ABAJO
Health First Europe’s European Patient Group on Antimicrobial Resistance and the Spanish Patients’ Forum (Foro Español de Pacientes) are glad to invite you to a high level event on Antimicrobial Resistance in Spain under the title "Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance in Spain: A call to boost prevention and control measures in Europe."
The event will take place in a hybrid format on Tuesday 19 September from 10am to 12pm at the European Parliament’s Liaison Office in Madrid. It will be 2 hours long, with presentations from keynote speakers followed by a discussion with the audience. It will be held in a bilingual (Spanish-English) format with simultaneous interpretation and will be moderated by Health First Europe. MEP Lina Gálvez (S&D, Spain) has kindly agreed to open the discussion.
The purpose of this event is to improve awareness and understanding of AMR, to strengthen ongoing activities on AMR and to advance solutions on how to address it, particularly prevention measures which should be further adopted by patients and healthcare professionals alike, improving outcomes for individuals and for society. Members of the AMR Patient Group will share their experiences of dealing with resistant bacteria and will call for actions at the European and national levels to combat this severe threat to public health. The event will focus specifically on the case of Spain.

About Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is the ability of a microorganism (e.g., a bacterium, a virus, or a parasite) to resist the action of one or more antimicrobial agents or antibiotics. Levels of antibiotic consumption consistently correlate with levels of antibiotic resistance, i.e., the more an antibiotic is used, the more resistant the bacteria can become. Overconsumption and mis-consumption of antibiotics make them therefore increasingly ineffective in fighting infections.
Considered one of the top global health threats by the World Health Organisation, AMR is a growing global burden and a serious societal and economic challenge. It is projected that inaction on AMR will result in 10 million deaths globally each year and a cumulative loss of over EUR 88 trillion to the world economy by 2050.
About the European Patient Group on Antimicrobial Resistance
The AMR Patient Group is an initiative by Health First Europe and is comprised of national patient associations from across Europe. The group aims to address the gap in awareness at the patient-level about the danger of antibiotic misuse and the lack of effective infection prevention measures. The AMR Patient Group will empower patients across Europe with the necessary knowledge about antimicrobial resistance so that everyone understands when it is appropriate to take antibiotics and how to take them responsibly.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health concern in the EU, which according to the
European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), is responsible for an estimated 33.000
deaths and €1.5 billion of added healthcare costs per year. One of the major global concerns in
today’s healthcare settings is the emergence and global spread of carbapenemase-producing
Enterobacterales (CPE). These are specific bacteria that are resistant to last resort antibiotics and
that spread easily in hospital settings, without appropriate Infection Prevention Control (IPC) policy.
The roundtable will offer a unique opportunity for AMR experts to share their latest findings
and best practices, which will enable both policymakers from the EU Institutions and national
representatives to have the essential information when they will discuss the upcoming EU policy
files on AMR and One Health.
The discussion will centre around the advantages that screening tools can bring in controlling the
silent spread of highly resistant micro-organism in hospitals. Through the lens of experts involved,
the event will consider how CPE screening can support Member States in improving IPC policy.

The AMR Patient Group will empower patients across Europe with the necessary knowledge about antimicrobial resistance so that everyone understands when it is appropriate to take antibiotics and how to take them responsibly.
Health First Europe is organising the first workshop of the newly created AMR Patient Group “Addressing antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections through patient empowerment” which will take place on Wednesday 16 December 2020 from 10:00 to 12:00 CET via RingCentral.
Europe’s first AMR Patient Group was officially launched on the 18th November 2020 to coincide with European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2020 and World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 November). The AMR Patient Group is comprised of national patient associations from across Europe. The group aims to address the gap in awareness at the patient-level about the danger of antibiotic misuse and the lack of effective infection prevention measures.
